Settling for redundantly regurgitating the spectacle of the final stages of the 1982 World Cup, this documentary compilation (narrated by Sean Connery, with commentary by Stan Hey) emerges as blandly unimaginative as its 'official film' status might imply. Where its 1966 precursor 'Goal' sustained itself on the potent novelty values of an England victory and flexible colour camerawork, this lags helplessly in the wake of high-quality blanket TV coverage, relying on a futile recreation of excitement over results and their immediate reverberations, while the penchant for low-angle close-ups on play ill serves a level of the game that's predominantly about finding and exploiting space.
