Two murders in a cottage hospital leave the surgeon, the anaesthetist and three attendant nurses as major suspects. But this is no ordinary country house whodunit; Launder and Gilliat's long experience as scriptwriters enables them to undermine the conventions to macabrely humorous effect. Amid the unpredictable explosions of World War II 'doodlebugs', Sim's eccentrically fallible detective rakes over the dirty secrets of his guilt-ridden suspects and leads us carefully up the garden path. 'Not one of my most successful cases', he is driven to confess; but one of Launder and Gilliat's most likeable films.
