In a Pennsylvanian town, works foreman Keaton persuades a Japanese car company to reopen a local factory. But his problems have just begun, because as employee liaison officer, he has to smooth over the introduction of streamlined practices and zero-defect efficiency. Soon he is unable to contain the workers' resentment: a walkout threatens the future of the partnership. Keaton, with bizarre facial expressions and smart-aleck wisecracks, makes much of the comic situations, but Howard fails to keep the line moving. Further, the hero, though funny, is ultimately unsympathetic, securing through his cosy pacts nobody's position but his own, while the upbeat ending justifies strike-breaking. With comrades like this, who needs class enemies?
