Snapshots of independent, neo-capitalist Slovakia, from the viewpoint of its citizens. This is an understated documentary, with the emphasis firmly on personal testimony. We hear from unemployed glass-blowers, a doleful lone mother and a homeless bridge-dweller who denies he's poor, as well as an expat Canadian family revisiting its roots. The World Bank likes the country's economic figures, but the only success story on display here is that of the jackpot winner on a glitzy TV show. Ambiguous freedom, indeed.
