Interestingly cast mainstream melodrama with Rogers a late replacement for Joan Fontaine as the woman shell-shocked soldier Cotten falls in love with before her 17-year-old daughter (Shirley Temple in her first adult role) blurts out a well-kept secret that threatens to destroy their romance. The contrivance is handled with a good deal of dignity by the ever-refined Dieterle, but producer Selznick wasn't satisfied with Temple's key monologue and hired in George Cukor to reshoot the crucial scene. Spot the joins?
