For those of us who would follow Mad Men’s John Slattery to the ends of the earth (provided there was Scotch), here’s the gauntlet: a tiresome estranged-father-son drama set at that perennial site of simmering tensions, the remote family cabin. Sulky Seth (Zach Gilford) isn’t expecting his divorced dad (Slattery) to show up; both of them bring along far more interesting girlfriends (Jena Malone and Gabrielle Union, respectively). In the wake of the spunkier Your Sister’s Sister, writer-director Brian Savelson can’t seem to mount a head of steam, and his chamber piece feels underdeveloped. Even Slattery’s sourness doesn’t redeem the banality of impending heart-to-hearts.
