The Abbotsford Anglers, a park cricket team from Sydney, wangle their way into a tournament in India, an adventure to test their team spirit and put them on their sporting mettle in this stolid fish-out-of-water comedy. Adapted from director Boyd Hicklin’s 2005 doc about the real-life Anglers, this piles on sundry sub-continent clichés (including a tiresomely inevitable Bollywood angle), and pays lip-service to the troubling issues of maturity facing these thirtysomethings, before unsurprisingly settling on the usual final-reel decider. The cast are amiably geeky and blokey as required, but there’s an underlying air of Aussie jingoism which perhaps doesn’t quite travel.
