La Tropical

Film

Time Out says

The title of David Turnley’s black-and-white doc refers to a Havana dance hall frequented by working-class Afro-Cubans, a lens through which he explores racial tensions, class divisions and personal struggles. Turnley, a Pulitzer Prize--winning photojournalist, seamlessly blends footage of the revelry that occurs at La Tropical with the perceptive commentary of its seasoned performers and music-obsessed patrons. While the film is filled with exuberant song-and-dance numbers, its most revealing scenes are shot outside the club, providing a sense of why the venue represents a much-needed escape.
