You could earwig in line outside gay clubs from now until Christmas and not hear smackdowns as good as in ‘Leave It on the Floor’. The best: ‘I’m glistening’ (that’s gay listening; basically not listening at all). Or this pearl: ‘He’s bullshit, you’re beluga.’ A low-budget gay musical, it’s set around the LA drag queen ball scene. If you’ve seen the cult 1990 doc ‘Paris Is Burning’ you’ll know the drill: gay and transgendered divas (mostly African-Americans) face off in red-carpet-meets-catwalk contests. Which makes for an oddly wholesome film. Brad (Ephraim Sykes), is kicked out by his mum for being gay and finds his kind of people and the love of his life, Carter (Andre Myers) at a drag ball. The script is sketchy but stuffed with the-sun’ll-come-out-tomorrow sing-along numbers, like ‘Justin’s Gonna Call’ (Timberlake not Bieber). As for voguing (the queens started it, not Madonna), I’d rather watch divas in Gaga ensembles chopping and shading than synchronised swimming any day.
