If Blade Runner was his Metropolis, Scott's next was his Die Nibelungen: a Teutonic myth in which the Lord of Darkness castrates a unicorn and thereby transforms a pastoral Eden into an arctic wasteland. Fortunately, sprightly Jack (Cruise) is on hand to set things to rights. Beautifully shot and designed, but in a cloyingly self-conscious manner, the film lacks the narrative drive that propels Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. There are a handful of impressive sequences though - and Tim Curry is a magnificent horned Beelzebub (though Cruise's original gnashers are as scary in their own way).
