Scripted, like Les Enfants du Paradis, by Jacques Prévert, this is another homage to the acting profession. However, lacking the historical perspective of the earlier film, Cayatte's handling of the story of two stand-ins for the stars of a film version of Romeo and Juliet, who slowly become the roles they play, quickly degenerates into a simple tale of young love, despite beautiful sets and atmospheric camerawork. Though set in Italy, with the Fascist past contributing to the troubles of the star-crossed lovers, it is interesting in retrospect as an indication of the mood of the post-war, pre-New Wave French cinema.
