Living in Emergency

It could be the pilot for a new prime-time medical drama: Four globe-trotting sawbones—not a euphemism, in this case—who are card-carrying members of Mdecins Sans Frontires (better known in the U.S. as Doctors Without Borders) save lives and cope with overwhelmed clinics deep within verdant Liberia and Congo. The heroic pragmatists of MSF finally get their well-deserved, in-the-trenches close-up, but instead of a piety party, documentarian Mark N. Hopkins gives us a mature look at the bracing yet very human personalities attracted to crisis. Those jumps between missions are confusing, but the in-field kvetching and no-holds-barred shots of wounds make this a vivid dispatch from the frontlines.—Nicolas Rapold
