An undistinguished gentle comedy that turns into an astoundingly saccharin
melodrama, Magnifico focuses on the good deeds of a saintly nine-year-old
Filipino boy (Manio). Little Magnifico is so wonderful that when his
impoverished family worries about purchasing a coffin for the dying grandmother,
the lad decides to build one himself. As he stretches a tape measure across the
sickly woman so that he can correctly size the box, he and Grandma share a belly
laugh. The noble, boring acts continue apace until the spectacularly sentimental
and manipulative ending.
