If Gilbert and George had created a comic book about the first manned mission to the red planet, it might look like this fresh and vibrant interplanetary love story, which writer-director Geoff Marslett animated using his own rotoscope technique. Mark Duplass is perfect as the film’s main protagonist, slacker astronaut Charlie Brownsville, but he’s upstaged by singer-songwriter Howe Gelb (who also wrote the soundtrack) as his boss, and Jewish cowboy-novelist Kinky Friedman playing the coolest American president we never had. But ‘Mars’ isn’t just visually striking, it’s also full of humour, heart and super-cute cartoon Martians.
