One of Fassbinder's most provocative films, Mother Küsters' Trip to Heaven sets out to nail political exploitation on the left rather than the right. Factory worker Küsters, faced with the threat of redundancy, kills his boss and commits suicide. His widow (Mira) finds herself deserted by her family and friends...until a wealthy communist couple (Böhm and Carstensen) decide to make political capital from her plight. The film achieved the distinction of being banned from both the official Berlin Festival and its fringe event, the Forum.
