Jeffrey Kagel could have been the lead singer for Blue Oyster Cult; instead, his path took him from the Long Island suburbs to LSD-counterculture guru Ram Dass. Kagel eventually ended up in India where, under the guidance of the Maharaj-ji, he transformed into the renowned devotional-chanting musician Krishna Das. First-time director Jeremy Frindel’s intimate documentary charts the journey of the immensely successful Das, and follows him on a U.S. tour, with archival material and concert footage capturing the humble, benevolent essence of a unique artist. Modest and affecting, it’s a portrait of the possibility of finding peace, contentment and self through both music and spirituality.
