An episodic slice-of-life drama (the last 24 hours in port of a group of young naval ratings) cut with muted suspense (a search for the identity of the comatose victim of a disco bouncer's brutality), this Channel 4-commissioned feature occupies an unhappy middle ground between the distinctive approaches of Loach and Hines (Looks and Smiles) and Frears and Poliakoff (Bloody Kids). Opportunistically and inappropriately lumbered with a 'Falklands factor' promotional emphasis during its cinema release, the film subsequently took a major prize at the Taormina festival - presumably awarded more for good intentions than achievements.
