Time Out says
A near-classic swashbuckler, adapted from the Rafael Sabatini novel set in 18th century France, with Granger desperate to avenge his dead friend by killing Mel Ferrer. But since he's not quite deadly enough with the rapier, he has to get some tuition. While all this revenge stuff simmers away, he falls in love with Miss Leigh, who may be his sister; and so, drawing the line at incest, he goes moodily back to sharpening his blade, while the plot unravels everyone's ancestry. Granger shows he can swash a buckle with the best of them, but whereas Fairbanks and Flynn did it with a grin, Granger wields the dirk with a smirk.
