‘School’ takes the teen slasher movie, complete with prettiest girl, the loser in love with her, and her mean friends and gives it a Turkish twist. ‘Buffy’, Stephen King, ‘American Pie’ and ‘Toxic Avenger’ may supply the plot, but the film also deals with the pressures of being a Turkish teenager with conviction. By making a ‘Hollywood’ film with Turkish cultural values, the Taylan brothers have set a precedent for being able to make any genre their own, no matter how tied to the dominating culture. This cliché-laden comedy horror might just be an important step in the evolution of Turkish cinema.
