The late R&B shouter Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a character made for documentary. Fascinating to listen to, and with a face that totally belies his then 70 years, Hawkins was a fresh alternative to BB King and his ilk, yet never attained their level of status or success. The ex-WWII sergeant (described here as the Bela Lugosi of music) was best known for his intense voodoo-style performances, and was clearly loved and admired by such fellow artists as director Jim Jarmusch and Animals frontman Eric Burdon.
