Brazil’s kidnapping epidemic gets a thorough, if voyeuristic, vetting in this stylistically overdone documentary that follows the impressive So Paulo Anti-Kidnap Police Force through four years of investigations. At its worst, the film (showcasing ride-along scenes with the obligatory handheld camerawork, time-stamped cop excursions and a drone-crazy soundtrack) comes off as numbingly lurid reality TV. But there are riveting moments, especially in tastefully shot interviews with former captives, who quietly describe their physical and psychological torture.—Stephen Garrett
