This deadpan Korean comedy seeks to lay bare religious hypocrisy by performing a simple transposition of essential urges, substituting gastronomic Puritanism for the usual sexual Puritanism at a Christian orphanage where the well-fed teachers warn that food is sinful and the kids pray that God will forgive them their daily bread – which here takes exclusive form as ‘choco pies’. (The plump title character is conspicuous for having the slowest metabolism.) What might have made a decent five-minute link in one of Buñuel’s late-career daisy chains is stretched to feature length, to decidedly reiterative effect.
