On the long list of comedy ideas screenwriters should never have had, this film must rank high. O'Neal reprises his performance from What's Up, Doc?, here cast as a klutz of a college professor co-opted to revive his father's ailing rag-trade business when he accidentally hits upon a craze in denims. The gimmick is jeans with see-through derriére, and most of the humour on display in this would-be screwball comedy has an inanity which follows suit with this central conceit. Directing his own script, Bergman executes his knowing movie references - O'Neal as Cary Grant, embarrassed in improvised drag; a nod toward the lustful satire of Tashlin's The Girl Can't Help It; a Marx Brothers-inspired night at the opera finale - with a kind of vulgar energy that does little to decorate his otherwise threadbare sitcom material.
