Plodding screen version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's stage musical in which an American Navy nurse on a South Pacific island falls in love with a middle-aged French planter, who later becomes a war hero. The lush visuals make the most of the exotic locations, but Logan's excessive use of colour filters is more distracting than effective. Some of the songs, at least, survived the transition: 'There Is Nothing Like a Dame', 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair', and, of course, 'Bali Ha'i'.
