Taking a 'fly on the tent' look behind the dusty glamour of India's Great Rayman circus, this visually straightforward, but compassionate documentary focuses on 50 girls aged from four to 24 who have been sold to the circus by their families. The greater the skill of these isolated captives, the more money goes home. When the likely alternative is entering the real 'cages' of Bombay's red light district, it might seem like they've landed on their feet. Rather than elicit pat responses from the juvenile interviewees, the film does just what documentary should - illuminate the complexity of the previously unseen.
