A model for all directors given the chance to make a low-budget genre quickie, Stranger offers Nagasaki's most charged vision of fear and loathing on the streets of Tokyo. Kiriko was a bank teller until she went to jail for fraud. Now she works as a taxi driver, lives alone and does her best to be 'one of the guys'. Her problems begin the night a passenger gives her a big note and leaves without waiting for change. Next time he gets in her cab, he tries to kill her - in what turns out to be the start of a sustained assault on her life at work and at home. Like the truck in Duel, this stranger just keeps on coming and Kiriko has no choice but to gear herself up to fight back. Powerhouse stuff.
