The 'legend' itself is sanctimonious drivel: Marie (Annabella), dismissed from her job as a maid for getting pregnant, wanders lonely and rejected, weeping for her namesake the Blessed Virgin, until she's taken in by the fallen women of a brothel; her soul fetches up in a heavenly replica of the kitchen where she started out, safeguarding the virtue of her illegitimate daughter back on earth. Censorship of the time gave her an 'invisible' pregnancy, and left the depiction of the brothel and its dykey madame bafflingly opaque. The large redeeming features are Fejös' visual style, and László Angyal's more or less continuous score.
