Time Out says

Decent, plodding attempt to tell it like it was in a German prisoner of war camp, which still manages to deal almost exclusively in stereotypes (every part comfortably tailored to a familiar character actor) and to wave a flag or two (what with rousing choruses of 'Roll Out the Barrel' drowning out the nasty propaganda emitted by the camp loudspeakers). Redgrave almost makes something of his character as a Czech prisoner who assumes a dead Englishman's identity and is forced for his own protection to write love letters to the widow. But with credibility barely enhanced by establishing shots filmed in occupied Germany, even he is finally swamped by the soap-opera atmosphere.
