Unforced camaraderie and some effective slapstick save this low-aspiration vehicle from its budgetary shortcomings. McCain shill Robert Davi (who also directs), Chazz Palminteri (funny as an oversexed chubby-chaser), Elya Baskin and Frank D’Amico play a washed-up L.A. doo-wop group struggling to stage a comeback while coming to terms with looming mortality. As movie characters tend to do under such circumstances, the foursome resorts to crime. There’s literally nothing new here, but if Clint Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones can coast on codgery charm, why not these harder-working character actors?
