Time Out says

Powell's subaquatic suspense picture follows war-weary US destroyer captain Mitchum as he tracks Jurgens' U-boat across the Atlantic, hoping to stop the vessel before she joins up with other German subs. The psychology of personal confrontation and the mechanics of marine combat are the focus here, rather than flagwaving, so we're allowed some sympathy for Jurgens, an old hand from the Great War who loves his country but despises the Nazis. Mitchum holds up the American end with his customary stoic reserve. Shot in CinemaScope.
