A cautionary concoction cobbled together from spare sci-fi paranoia parts,
The Final Cut imagines a benign Big Brother invited into folks' frontal
lobes via a chip camcorder installed before birth. After death, these implant
recipients' recorded memories are spliced by a professional editor (Williams)
into a lasting visual tribute lionizing the deceased client. It's a nifty idea
for a nail-biter, and Williams seems to be channeling The Conversation's
Harry Caul. But any grace notes the actor's performance brings to the table get
swept aside by the picture's elephantine bumbling through ethical terrain only
peripherally touched upon.
