Adapted from Hans Koningsberger's novel, this is the classic story of a youth (Voight, excellent) seeking change but unsure how to bring it about, set within the context of revolutionary politics in a seedy and deliberately anonymous London that might be taken as any major city. Paul Williams' film is a masterful piece of social observation. Although the issues raised by The Revolutionary are the age-old ones of means-versus-ends, it achieves a certain integrity by its determinedly low-key approach to its subject.
