A fairly formulary kid's adventure out of the Wilderness-Family-Robinson mould, this makes a half-hearted attempt to break away from the triteness of the Disney stereotype, before succumbing to a catalogue of the beauties and savageries of nature and the blissful benefits of family life. Peopled with such representatives of the 'New Consciousness' as a widowed father ready to sail his young daughters round the world to show them 'what kind of man' he is, an independent female photojournalist, and a 12-year old street-smart black stowaway, the film spends a short time promising interesting tensions between them, before dumping them on the Alaskan coastline to fend for themselves in exemplary Baden-Powell fashion (though the women do turn out to be the better providers) while awaiting rescue/attempting escape. Déja vu for all but the youngest viewer.
