Originally The Skull of the Marquis de Sade, but the title had to be changed when De Sade's descendants in France complained. It's about a collector of occult objects (Cushing) who is offered the skull of the 'divine Marquis', and the vicious murders that subsequently take place. The script from Robert Bloch's short story hasn't been worked out very well, but there is one extraordinary dream sequence, and the whole film is directed by Freddie Francis with much technical panache.
