Time Out says

No scope for Borzage's gorgeously swooning, religiose romanticism in this swashbuckler, one of his most conventional movies. But it's also very enjoyable, most notably for Slezak, revelling as the villainous Spanish viceroy whose intended (O'Hara in fine fiery mood) is abducted by honest pirate Henreid, and for George Barnes' lavish Technicolor photography, which makes the most of the glorious sets, costumes and locations. If the script (co-written by Herman J Mankiewicz and George Worthing Yates) is hackneyed, Borzage films it with just the right amount of tongue in cheek. Wittier than Polanski's Pirates by a long way.
