Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law

It may have been a huge hit in Spain, but this black parodic comedy about an irredeemably sexist, racist, braggart, ex-cop slob and his 'investigations', made with a gullible neighbour, into the behind-the-scenes criminal operations of a Chinese restaurant is dismally broad, obvious, crude and visually ugly. Its anti-PC outrageousness notwithstanding, you can still see it heading for an upbeat sentimental ending; worse, because Segura's protagonist finally turns out to be some kind of hero, there no discernible distance between the character's odious attitudes and those of the film. Crass.
