Or 'tele-vision', being the strange beast brought to an isolated southeastern Turkish township in 1974, by a less than helpful government delivery unit who don't stop even to set it working. Bemused and baffled, the characters confer an air of mystery on the box, which it preserves in its stony inoperability. The believers comprise the mayor, a fondly mocked paternal figure, and 'crazy' Emin, a Mr Fixit eccentric who lives on the edge of town. The doubters are led by the perturbed cinema owner and the preening local bullshitter. But there's plenty more life beyond the simple bounds of the plot. A blockbuster hit in Turkey, this is a gentle, rambling comedy with a minor point to make. Odd to see a film so positive about TV, the eternal enemy.
