Calhoun certainly makes an authentic cowboy. An ex-lumberjack, ranch hand and forester, he was given an unlikely break in movies after a chance meeting with Alan Ladd. He stars as the gaucho, a renegade from the Argentine pampas who bitterly resents the way that 'civilisation' is transforming his backyard. Despite the South American settings, this unfolds like a very conventional Western, and doesn't bear comparison with Tourneur's masterly Out of the Past, or his cult horror films Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie.
