Wives

'We want fun - we can screw at home!' This manifesto voiced by one of the three wives, part way through a spree begun in the wake of a school reunion, gives a small clue as to the direction taken by Breien's film. It is of course a reply to Cassavetes' Husbands, and a cheerful, relaxed, and good-humoured one, with some of the conspiratorial overtones of a school adventure story, and with some deliciously peppery gags. The script, with its astute contributions to script as well as performance from Breien's lead actresses, is quite a landmark in feminist cinema.
