Minor but typically elegant and enjoyable Cukor, taken from a French stage success (by Pierre Barton and Charles Simon), in which Colbert's vivacious can-can dancer falls (somewhat implausibly) for Marshall, only to find that he's married. Hardly a blazingly original story, but Cukor makes the most of the turn-of-the-century theatrical milieu, rhyming Zaza's on-stage performances (with Colbert herself singing) with the various deceptions that define Marshall's treatment both of her and of his own family. It's a fine example of Colbert at her very engaging best.
