In the last few years, vinyl listening rooms, record bars, cafes and other music-led spaces have begun cropping up across Mumbai. It’s a phenomenon modelled on Japan’s kissa culture, no doubt – a trend that’s found its way to London and New York, and Delhi, among other places – but the urge to go analogue isn’t always just about switching off from your devices or carving out a few hours of me-time.

Sure, ditch the phone, but what about the joy of listening? The ritual of choosing a record, watching the needle drop, sitting through an entire album and, if you’re sufficiently committed, making a passionate case for why vinyl sounds better. Audiophiles, after all, will die on this hill. Technically, they’re not entirely wrong.

Back to Mumbai – and the vinyl bars here have got game. Some are serious listening rooms built around high-end sound systems; others are bars and cafes where vinyl is part of the experience. Either way, they offer an alternative to the usual loud night out, where you spend half the evening shouting at your friends and the other half pretending you can hear the DJ.

Mumbai’s vinyl scene is still young and finding its feet, which is precisely what makes it interesting. If you’re curious about vinyl, looking for a good listening room in Mumbai, or simply want a bar where the music doesn’t have to compete with the crowd, start here. These are the vinyl bars, listening rooms and record-led spaces worth knowing around the city. Let that needle drop.

Editor’s note

Mumbai’s also got a number of other spaces that don’t strictly classify themselves as vinyl bars or listening rooms, but still make music a priority. Idoru in Bandra boasts some of the best Japanese liquor and sound quality in the city, for instance. And The Revolver Club does listening sessions and pop-ups at various restaurants across Mumbai and even the rest of India. It even helps set up systems in spaces, and of course, it is on every analogue music lover’s speed dial for records, turntables, and more.

What is it? A retro-paradise in Kala Ghoda where analogue hours are a regular affair, with a side of Asian fare.

Why we love it: The Listening Room, an audiophile chamber, is located inside The Dimsum Room, which is situated inside a 100-year-old building, and old-world charm’s woven into the brand DNA. Of the three spaces under TDR, TLR’s the largest, and comes equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system with the setup done by Munro Acoustics. The music shifts effortlessly from smooth jazz to modern electronic beats – ABBA to Elvis to The Beatles to Daft Punk.

The food and drinks pair exceptionally well with good music – dim sum have to be the unfussiest snack around. the setting.

What is it? Mumbai’s first dedicated vinyl-only listening sanctuary in South Mumbai, perfect for private listening.

Why we love it: Owner Saurabh Krishna Shetty, who is also the director of the Krishna Palace Hotel that houses this vinyl haven, takes music very seriously, and it shows. Baroke’s home to a collection of over 400 vinyl records that date between the 1960s and 1990s. It’s not just international albums and artists – he’s got a penchant for the great RD Burman too.

Arguably the coolest part of the space is the headphone zone designed by Rohit Bohite, which allows folks to slip into their own personal listening session. The place really does deliver on balanced acoustics and longer attention spans, thanks to the high-fidelity setup, which makes for a slick, cocoon-like intimacy.

Time Out tip: Keep track on their Insta for some cool, curated events.

What is it? A gentleman’s club meets a late-night Tokyo izakaya meets a listening room – a direct import from London.

Why we love it: At Black Lacquer, which is inside Roswyn Mumbai – a Morgans Originals Hotel and a 109-suite-only property – music comes first. This vinyl-led listening room has an extensive collection, and the records are on display above the bar. One minute you may be listening to Peggy Chu, another Adriatiaque, another some local artist. It allows you to drift through time and space while the mood is set by the vinyl playback. They have Black Lacquer Fridays and Reverb on Saturdays; it’s best to check their socials for the next ones.

A note on their food and drink – which are exceptional. The ceviche and katsu curry are must orders. It’s an admittedly dim setting, but your eyes will naturally adjust.

What is it? A chef-led restaurant that weaves vinyl culture seamlessly with analogue music, conversations, and curated cocktails along with great food.

Why we love it: Chef Anand Morwani’s Gaijin has become a go-to for many things. Among them is Gaijin Radio, their vinyl listening station inspired by Japan’s underground music bars. The restaurant boasts a high-fidelity Donley sound system, through which the sound clarity of vinyls is precise, real and balanced. In fact, the vinyls are from the founders’ own collection. There’s Parcels – Live Vol, Maribu State, Fela Kuti, Fugees, Jungle and more. The radio keeps spinning.

In addition to that, they also have Off The Record nights, regular vinyl listening nights featuring various artists. They keep the sound curated, the ambience tight, and the cocktails inventive.

Time Out tip: Don’t miss their Not Beef Carpaccio.

Price: ₹2,600 plus taxes with alcohol for two.

Timings: Tues-Sun. Noon–3pm and 7pm–1.30am.

Rumbabaa

What is it? A warm, Japanese-minimalist, all-day coffee and vinyl escape in Andheri West.

Why we love it: They’re really serious about hitting pause here, and have even personified Rumbabaa as someone who appreciates great coffee, good music, and knows how to slow down. Mornings are intentional, and the easy ambience flows smoothly from the afternoons into the evening, all while records play throughout the day. Their vinyl corner may be small, but the music fills the room well.

They serve brews, bowls, small plates, pizzas, desserts, and wine service in the evenings. When you hear the name, it may remind you of the small yeast cake soaked in a rich rum-flavoured syrup, which, of course, you’ve got to order, plus their tiramisu French toast.

Time Out tip: The loft’s the cosiest.

Price: ₹1,000 without alcohol and ₹1,500 with alcohol per person

Timings: Daily. 9am–midnight.

Address: RumBabaa, Off New Link Rd, behind Yash Raj Studios back Gate, Industrial Area, Andheri West, Mumbai 400053
