Mumbai events in May

Instead of May flowers, we’ve got a list of heatwave-proof events to keep you cool, in every sense of the word

Picture this. It is a sweltering May evening. It’s been a long week. You’ve just rewarded yourself with a hefty lunch and mangoes in three different forms; fruit, lassi and ice cream to ‘cool off’ and now you don’t know what to do with the rest of the weekend. As tiring as it is attending plans, making them can be even harder in weather that makes you crave a literal brain-freeze. So instead let us make plans for you because no heat is stopping this month from being a stacked one.

Perhaps the most exciting thing we have this month is Ye in India and Mochakk’s multicity India debut tour. IPL quite literally heats up with some beloved rivalries in action at Wankhede Stadium. Musicland is finally here after months of delays to celebrate local hip hop like no other.

A Time Out favourite, Art Night Thursday, is back on the list, among some other cool museum exhibits, festivals and galleries worth checking out. Bandra remains the trendiest neighbourhood with a one-of-a-kind gourmet night market and the opening of a new theatre space featuring some cool comedians. You would be remiss not to attend one of the many live gigs, International Jazz Day celebrations and EDM parties happening around the city. It seems like Mumbai sure knows how to keep up with the soaring temperatures.

What's happening in May

Ye in India

This technically this doesn’t classify as a Mumbai event, but if THE Kanye West is making his India debut, it’s making every single must-do list in the country. After a month-long delay, the controversial hip hop legend is coming to Delhi, bringing a legacy of over two decades of genre-defining music with him. Tickets are magically still available on District and it might just be worth a trip to the capital.

Kanan Gill | Not This Again

Is India’s beloved comedian Kanan Gill approaching a mid-life crisis? Possibly. Is he touring while in the throes of it? Absolutely. The man just knows how to make existential crises funny and we can thank being in your mid-30s for that. It’s wit with a sharp edge. Deep. Hard hitting and hilarious. Your cynicism is more than welcome here. Get tickets for his Mumbai shows on BookMyShow.

Those Who Know They Know

Do you know those who know they know? This is real underground techno. A rave so mysterious, you don’t know where it is. The details for this event reads more like an encrypted FBI file than an event description with Agents, riddles and code names. We’ve got secret signals resurfacing eight years later, encrypted codes for venue details, and a black and white only dress code. The venue is so secret that shuttles will be transporting concert-goers to their destination. A lineup of 10+ DJs (specifics haven’t been announced, of course) and ticket holders are tasked with a mission. Making techno fun again. We love to see it! Tickets on BookMyShow.

Date:  Saturday May 30, 4pm onwards

Address: Those who know, they know…

Price: ₹1,999 onwards

Museum and Gallery Exhibits

In my opinion, museum larping is the best summer activity to avoid the intense heatwaves we’ve got coming this month. You get your 10k steps in, easily spend half a day sauntering around, and also feed your brain big time. The best museums and galleries in the city seem to have caught on to this strategy and are rewarding us with some super cool exhibits. Here’s a few examples:

  • CSMVS has a fascinating exhibit on Waste Archives as Landscapes. It’s Navjot Altaf’s ode to debris and an exploration of human relationships with their environment
  • Ticket Tika Chaap at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum walks you through the surprising significance of Indian textile labels or tikats. An illuminating exhibit that shows you the deep historical context behind what ‘Made in India’ really symbolises.

It’s an exciting new venture from the makers of the Mumbai Comedy Festival and That Comedy Club. The Ranipur Theatre Company is celebrating the opening of a new independent arts combined space in Bandra. Post opening weekend, the new space has a number of events lined up for the month of May – there’s very late night comedy which may or may not be headlined by mysterious very famous comedians. There’s also famous comedians Sumukhi Suresh and Masoom Rajwani doing a guaranteed series of solo shows at the theatre. It’s always fun to be the guinea pigs for a new space, or victims of comedians trying new bits. Either way, get your tickets on BookMyShow.

Omakase Himitsu Nights

Otoki has quickly and firmly cemented itself as one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city – a bold claim considering it’s just under a year old and in competition with dozens of revered Japanese joints in the city. However, what makes them special is their ability to constantly level up, and that’s exactly what they're doing in May. Head Chef Mohit Singh is hosting a visionary 14-course, 6-seater omakase experience every Wednesday. No menu, just a celebration of the art of Japanese cooking that literally translates to 'I’ll leave it up to you'. Book your seats in advance on District.

Mother’s Day Painting With Puppies

The sentimentality is off the charts here. Mother’s day. Puppies. Painting. Bombay Tacos. Kind of says it all. It’s tears-of-joy-inducing wholesome and will definitely make for a memorable Mother’s Day, no matter what age group, mother or child. For anyone begging their mum for a dog, this might just be the trick. Lather her in puppies and compliments before casually mentioning that all the puppies belong to the shelter Pawga and are available for adoption. Mother Theresa herself would be very proud of this event.
