Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All at Once wins almost everything

It was a huge night for the little indie sci-fi that came from nowhere to take over the world. Everything Everywhere All At Once took a multitude of Oscars back to the multiverse, including Best Picture, Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh.

There were also Best Supporting wins for the film’s stars, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, two wildly popular picks, and a Best Original Screenplay win for Kwan and Scheinert. It also won Best Editing for a total tally of seven Academy Awards.

As expected, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for The Whale to cap another comeback story in a year rich in them.

It was a great night, too, for Netflix’s surprise awards contender All Quiet on the Western Front. It won for Best International Film, Best Score, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography.

There were few big surprises but plenty of feel-good comeback narratives, with Kimmel noting that Quan and Fraser’s wins represented a blue-riband evening for fans of cult 1992 comedy Encino Man (‘It’s a bad night for [co-star] Pauly Shore,’ joked the host).

Sarah Polley picked up Best Adapted Screenplay for her adaptation of Miriam Toews’s novel ‘Women Talking’, while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won Best Animation and ‘Naatu Naatu’ from RRR won Best Song.

There was love for the year’s big blockbusters, too. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Ruth Carter won Best Costume Design and Top Gun: Maverick picked up Best Sound.

An enjoyably upbeat Oscars ceremony was handled with a nicely-judged mix of smoothness and gentle snark by third-time host Jimmy Kimmel. There were regular jokes about ‘The Slap’, signalling an obvious determination not to sweep last year’s Will Smith incident under the carpet skirting close to overkill, and a random audience Q&A had A-listers trying to hide in their seats, but by and large, he nailed the tone.
