Join us Thursday, April 16th at the downtown Orlando Public Library in celebrating the art of preserving the memories and perceptions of individuals who have witnessed unique slices of life in this ever-changing world. Readings and photographic presentations by Emita Brady Hill, co-editor of Bronx Faces and Voices and Eric Dusenbery, author and photographer behind Florida Soup: Putting History On the Table.

We'll pair community voices from both nearby and far away, emphasizing both the intimate and expansive significance of “local”. Featuring the experiences of food producers in our home state of Florida, photographer and storyteller Eric Dusenbery presents portraits from his newly-published book, Florida Soup: Putting History On the Table. The collection offers a rich harvest of storytellers, from a tobacco-spitting blue crab fisherman to a rancher who reminisces about Depression-era farming.

Emita Hill shares stories perhaps less familiar yet equally deserving of remembrance: those of elected officials, religious leaders, community members, and activists who experienced first hand the troubled years of arson, crime, abandonment, and flight throughout the 1970s and 1980s in the Bronx. Rich, provocative first-hand narratives (co-edited by Emita Brady Hill and Janet Butler Munch) from those who were determined to preserve the stability of their community, paired with portraits by photographers Georgeen Comerford and Walter Rosenblum, document the Bronx "faces" in their beauty and diversity: young and old, witnesses to the history they lived and created.

Q&A to follow the presentations. Don’t forget to pick up copies of Bronx Faces & Voices and Florida Soup at the event and to stick around for the book signing!
