Functionally Literate Presents: Ellen Datlow, Pat Rushin & Teege Braune

Our first Function of 2015––and our first ever event in a circular room––features readings by award-winning horror editor Ellen Datlow (The Doll Collection), author and screenwriter Pat Rushin (The Call), and the inimitable Teege Braune. Join us for a genre-bending night of beer, wine, and books in the Patrons Room ("the round room") inside the Lowndes Shakespeare Center. The reading will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Books for sale by our favorite local indie, Bookmark It. Our Functions are always free to attend. If you want to help keep these events free, donations are welcome. Just look for the jar conspicuously placed next to the booze. ABOUT THE READERS Ellen Datlow has been editing science fiction, fantasy, and horror short fiction for almost thirty years. She has won the Hugo, Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, and many other awards for her editorial work. She was fiction editor of OMNI magazine and SciFiction and has edited more than fifty anthologies. Her latest anthology, The Doll Collection, features original dark tales of dolls from an impressive list of bestselling and award-winning authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Seanan McGuire, and and Jeffrey Ford. Pat Rushin is the author of the story collection Puzzling Through the News. His original feature-length screenplay, The Zero Theorem, was produced in 2014 by The Zanuck Company and Voltage Pictures, and directed by Terry Gilliam. He has published essays, screenplays, poetry, but mostly stories in a variety of literary magazines, including The North American Review, Quarterly West, Sudden Fiction, Indiana Review, The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Johns Hopkins Magazine, American Literary Review, Fwriction : Review, and elsewhere. He teaches creative writing at the University of Central Florida, where he has also (twice upon a time) served as editor of The Florida Review. Teege Braune was run out of his home state of Indiana following a series of transgressions including, but not limited to, moonshining, pie thieving, cat wrangling, bar brawling, name calling, grave robbing, heart throbbing, heart stealing (two separate charges), reckless endangerment, and failure to signal before making a left turn. He arrived in Florida worn out, half-starved, and in dire need of a bath, stumbling across the state line just as dawn broke and the sweltering sun arose over the lonely palms, sandy beaches, and gator-infested swamps. Teege has made a home in the city beautiful. He earns his keep by tending bar, teaching English, and has even been known to spin the occasional yarn in exchange for a wink and a smile.
