Going Out In Style Beauty Tips From Egypt's Mummies says
Join us for the third edition of our four-part Anthropology Speaker Series, with special guest speakers from the University of Central Florida.

We may get dolled up for going out to a party - but there was a very different reason to make oneself up in ancient times. This talk is appropriate for Orlando Science Center guests of all ages and will explore ancient Egyptian mummification. Ancient Egyptians prepared for death the same as if they were preparing for a party. Entering eternity was the biggest social events of life. From styling their hair to wearing sunscreen, their use of plants, dyes, minerals, and animal products rivals anything that we might use today. Dr. Williams will explore some of these products and how we have discovered their uses through our study of Egyptian mummies.

Dr. Lana Williams is a bioarchaeologist specializing in research of human health and diet. She received her PhD in 2008 from University of Western Ontario and was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal in 2009. She has been a member of the Dakhleh Oasis Project in Egypt since 2002, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven project at Dayr al-Barsha in Egypt since 2006, and also works with various archaeological projects in Europe, the Near East, and Mesoamerica. The central goal of Dr. Williams’ research is to better understand the synergistic complexities among biological, social and physical environments in the past. She focuses particularly on isotopic and elemental analysis of hair, seasonality in fertility and disease, musculoskeletal biomechanics and patterns of activity, and placement of the dead in the physical and social landscapes.
