Nerd Nite Orlando Xliv says
Join us on Thursday, October 13th for another evening of thinking and drinking.

Nerd Nite, formed in 2003, is an evening of entertaining yet thought-provoking presentations– all while the audience drinks along in a casual atmosphere.

Speakers present for 15-20 minutes each on a fascinating subject, often in an uncanny and unconventional way. Following each presentation is a brief Q&A with the audience. Nerd Nite currently operates in over 106 cities around the world.

Live Nerd Nite presentations in Orlando are always the second Thursday of every month.

Come meet up, drink, and learn something new!

RSVP is required. Sign up here:

“Fear and Loathing in Systems Administration” by Waldo Grunenwald

Waldo is a geek, and if you find him odd, there are plenty of things you could blame that on. He comes from a background of Operations/Systems Engineering, enjoys leading teams, and is active in the DevOps community. He may or may not be Batman. He is pretty keen on helping orgs stop hurting themselves, insight tooling (trending / monitoring / alerting), and automation in general, and actually enjoys public speaking. He hates writing about himself in the third person, and aspires to one day be a better bio writer.

“Fractals: A New Geometry ‘Lets Get Deep’” by SWAMI

In this presentation, we will explore and discover the power and profundity of “fractals” in their infinite complexity yet simple basis. This mathematical beauty offers a wide range of wonders: scientific and artistic; pure and applied.

“Swami” has been a “nerd” since he was a kid watching the original airings of Star Trek in the 60’s. He went on to earn a degree in engineering; enjoyed a career in 3D animation/graphics/programming; traveled the world; then explored mathematics to the extent of teaching/tutoring, and starting a math/philosophy group, the Wing Circle. Above all, Swami loves to create, learn, share, and grow!

“Bow Ties are Cool: Geek chic, identity and a thin strip of cloth.” By Bobby Wesley

Are bow ties still cool? Are they hip or does wearing one make you a total dork/hipster/old fogey? Should that even matter? Our fashions are all choices, sure, but do the clothes actually “make the man?”

That all sounds serious, but this talk is not. We’ll discuss bow tie history, fashion and identity formation through pop culture jokes and self-deprecating humor. I may even teach you to tie one. Bow ties!!

Bobby Wesley is a writer, marketing guy and storyteller. He likes to get dressed up and drink nice cocktails. Though he never intended it, he is often referred to as “the bow tie guy.”
