Qing Ming Memorial Service

The Qing Ming Festival falls on the 104th day after the winter solstice and is also known as Clear Bright Festival, Ancestor’s Day and Tomb Sweeping Day. It is a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime and tend to the graves of the departed ones.

Guang Ming Temple will conduct the Filial Piety Dharma Service on Sunday, April 3, chanting the Diamond Sutra. Merits that we have gained wll be transferred for the good health and prosperity of our loved ones who are still with us and for the rebirth in the Pure Land for those who have departed.

The Diamond Sutra

The Diamond Sutra is one of the great wisdom texts of Buddhism. It is read, studied and chanted by those wishing to learn from the Buddha’s teachings. Buddhists believe that we must not only gain knowledge from the concentrated study. We must also put the words to use in our lives, from religious practice to daily thought and actions.
The Diamond Sutra is so named because the teaching cuts through our illusions and takes us to the ultimate truth. The Sutra, in its profundity is at the same time simply stated yet difficult to understand. Much is devoted to the concept of “emptiness” which confounds the Western mind. However, there is much to be learned and applied without study of the more complex parts of the teaching. The Diamond Sutra has four “action” themes that we can apply in our daily lives.
1. Give without Clinging to Any Notion
2. Deliver All Beings Without the Notion of Self
3. Live without Attachment
4. Cultivate without Any Expectation
