The after-hours bash on September 12 features the likes of Takkyu Ishino, the Fullhouse crew and Shigekix

Over the past five decades, few retailers have exerted as profound an influence on Japanese fashion and youth culture as Beams. The tastemaking juggernaut that pioneered the ‘select shop’ concept built its success by introducing Japan to the products, culture and atmosphere of the American West Coast, but has since expanded its purview significantly, especially through a steady stream of collaborations with an international roster of creatives and companies.
Still going strong in its 50th anniversary year, Beams is putting on a huge party in Osaka this September. ‘Beams 50 Festival’ is taking over Rohto Heart Square Umekita at Grand Green Osaka on the weekend of September 11 and 12.
Putting a stylish spin on the classic Japanese summer festival experience, the event is set to feature everything from taiko drumming, a kids’ disco and a ‘Beams bon odori’ to a bingo tournament and live performances by melodic punk outfit Yona Yona Weekenders and improv instrumental band Za Savage.
You can also look forward to distinctive takes on staple festival games like yo-yo scooping, shateki target-shooting and ring toss, plus a certifiably well-curated selection of booths by over 25 local shops and eateries dealing in festival grub, craft beer, sweets, used clothing, flowers, tableware and more.
On September 12, the main festivities will be followed by an afterparty at the adjacent Time Out Market Osaka, with DJs including techno legend Takkyu Ishino and Cazbow and Nazanael from the Fullhouse collective on the decks.
Smooth moves will be provided by breakdancing star and Paris Olympics contestant Shigekix, alongside New Trad, Juggless, Stylez Thesis and other up-and-coming dancers. The afterparty takes place from 8pm to 11pm.
Whether you’re in the mood for style-conscious shopping, festival fun or dance floor action, no matter – you’d best make a beeline for this one-off Beams bash. Entry to the festival is free, while the afterparty costs ¥2,000 (with one drink included).
