Some people leave Osaka with a box of takoyaki-flavoured snacks. Others would rather immortalise themselves inside the visual aesthetic of a discount supermarket. Super Tamade now has both groups covered.
The Osaka grocery chain – famous for rock-bottom prices and storefronts so aggressively neon that they make Don Quijote look restrained – has installed its own original purikura photo booth at its Shinsekai store. Announced on July 31, the machine comes with ten Super Tamade-exclusive frames, all drenched in the chain's unmistakable yellow, red and rainbow-coloured branding.
There are two ways to commit yourself to the bit: a standard photo sheet costs ¥700, while an oversized version is ¥1,100. Unlike the usual beauty-filtered purikura booth hiding in the corner of an arcade, this one is less about pretending you have enormous eyes and more about leaving Osaka looking like you have been personally sponsored by the city's most chaotic supermarket.
Super Tamade has been around since 1978 and built its name as one of Osaka's best-known discount grocery chains, historically famous for ultra-cheap promotions and a visual identity closer to a pachinko parlour than a neighbourhood supermarket. In recent years, that look has become almost as recognisable as the bargains themselves.
Its Shinsekai branch, which opened in April 2026 a few minutes from Dobutsuen-mae Station, leans especially hard into that cult status. Conceived as the chain's first 'experiential' supermarket, it pairs the regular grocery shop with Shinsekai-only food such as the Tamade Burger, a second-floor eat-in space and original capsule toys. The purikura booth is the latest addition – essentially turning a grocery run into a souvenir stop.
So yes, you can still go to Super Tamade for cheap groceries. But now you can also take a tiny, fluorescent piece of it home with you.
